class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent<\/span><b> lockdown in March 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many schools had no choice but to adopt Google Classroom as a digital platform to solve the needs of <\/span><b>distance education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of families in Barcelona did not welcome authorizing their children to use<\/span><b> Google or Microsoft tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they considered that these companies did not preserve the sovereignty of information and personal data, in addition to the risk that could entail captivating students as future clients of these companies at such young ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, together with the group of digital activists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xnet-x.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Xnet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they presented a proposal to develop a pilot plan promoted with the financial support of the <\/span><b>Barcelona City Council<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ajuntament de Barcelona) with the aim of promoting the democratic digitization of educational centers with <\/span><b>open source tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This proposal was based on a package of solutions integrated into various platforms, among which were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Moodle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: learning management tool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>NextCloud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: file repository<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>BigBlueButton<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Jitsi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: video conferencing systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>WordPress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: website and content management<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Etherpad<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: collaborative web editor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Solution\"><\/span>Solution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The architecture was based on <\/span><b>agile developments and continuous integration and deployment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For this, we worked with Docker container technology and <\/span><b>infrastructure as code.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This allowed us to install this platform without having an advanced knowledge of the systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important challenge, from a technical point of view, was the integration of all these platforms, as it was essential for the user to have the <\/span><b>feeling they were navigating in the same application<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by having to <\/span><b>login just once<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using single sign-on credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Keycloak was implemented as an identity and access permission manager. This application is responsible for user authentication and all the configuration across the different tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the most outstanding functional challenge was to <\/span><b>simplify the use of the platforms and to adapt them to the users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the educational centers, such as the management team, teachers, coordinators, tutors or students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this purpose, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tresipunt.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>3ipunt<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed a<\/span><b> theme and several Moodle plugins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to facilitate the navigation and management of classroom content. Our <\/span><b>UX<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team captured all the requirements agreed between the project stakeholders in an interactive mockup, facilitating the development, validation and evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This graphic theme is based on the <\/span><b>navigation of the most important social networks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that users, who increasingly use these products, do not have a complex learning curve, applying the Jakob Nielsen standardization principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Results\"><\/span>Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first phase of development, <\/span><b>three educational centers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered to test a very advanced and functional pilot during the 2021-2022 academic year, while being able to validate with real users and real content all the functionalities we implemented, and in which it is expected to apply continuous evolutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project <\/span><b>was welcomed with great enthusiasm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the educational community, not only in Barcelona, but in the rest of Spain, so it is expected that this type of project will consolidate and help improve digital training and culture especially among the youngest ones.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Together with
