SOS Children’s Villages: a global learning platform with Moodle Workplace

When your mission is to improve the lives of children and young people around the world, ensuring solid and accessible training for those who work with them is non-negotiable. Since 2010, SOSvirtual, the digital learning initiative of SOS Children’s Villages International, has been promoting the development of workers’ skills, strengthening their knowledge and abilities to ensure quality services in all of the organization’s programs.

With its global expansion since 2021, SOSvirtual faces an enormous challenge: offering a consistent, multilingual, and scalable learning experience for more than 25,000 professionals spread across six regions and 134 countries. To achieve this, they needed a robust, flexible, and economically sustainable platform. And that’s where 3ipunt came in.

The challenge: global growth without increasing costs or complexity

Before the project, SOSvirtual used an LMS solution that worked well in the Latin American context but could not keep pace with its international expansion. The main challenges were clear:

  • Limited scalability: the platform served around 5,000 people, which was insufficient for the global audience.
  • Expensive licensing model: the increase in cost per active user made it impossible to grow without compromising the budget.
  • Poor integration with internal systems: this made management, authentication, and reporting difficult.
  • Need for true multilingualism: 15 languages, multiple countries, and great cultural diversity.

Added to this was a key requirement: the transition to the new LMS could not interrupt services. Training had to continue without interruption.

The decision: a solid platform and a trusted partner

The evaluation process involved technical, pedagogical, and IT teams from multiple countries, together with SOS ICT Global. All agreed on the fundamental criteria:

  • Scalability without additional costs per active user
  • Flexibility to adapt to the global organizational structure
  • Advanced customization and multilingual capabilities
  • Seamless integration with existing systems

Moodle Workplace met all the requirements, and choosing a Moodle Premium Certified Partner ensured implementation in line with best practices.

“Working with a certified partner guaranteed us experience, reliability, and a solid setup from day one”. Andrés Jiménez, ICT Director LAAM y Project Owner de SOSvirtual

The solution: a global Moodle Workplace with a multitenant approach

At 3ipunt, we designed and implemented a multitenant Moodle Workplace environment capable of hosting more than 80 courses and adapting to the local needs of each country. The solution enabled:

1. Organization by tenants for each National Association

  • Customized spaces by country
  • A unique visual identity without losing overall cohesion
  • Better segmentation by roles and profiles

2. Flexibility and customization

  • Adapted boards
  • Unified course catalog
  • Different experiences depending on role

3. Integration and accessibility

  • Connection to the internal authentication system
  • Optimization for low-connectivity contexts
  • Advanced reports and dashboards for decision-making

4. A clear and seamless implementation process

  • Planned transition in stages
  • Training for administrators
  • Ongoing support from 3ipunt

“The advice provided by the 3ipunt team was clear, transparent, and strategic. The platform works exactly as we expected, which demonstrates the quality of the onboarding process”.- Equipo SOSvirtual

Results: a global platform that makes a difference

The implementation in 2024 has enabled learning to be scaled up quickly and efficiently across the entire federation. The data confirms this:

  • 56,000+ course registrations
  • 15,000+ coworkers actively participating
  • 44,000+ certificates issued
  • 134 countries connected through the same platform

In addition, the organization highlights key benefits:

  • Optimal performance even with thousands of simultaneous users
  • Simplified and accessible reports
  • Intuitive and consistent user experience
  • A stable environment that allows for unlimited growth

“Moodle Workplace has strengthened our ability to reach more countries efficiently and in line with our strategic priorities.”.

Thanks to Moodle Workplace, SOSvirtual now has a platform ready to continue expanding its catalog and exploring new digital learning opportunities, including initiatives based on AI, automation, and pedagogical innovation.

The goal is clear: to continue promoting the development of thousands of professionals so that they can offer the best possible care to children, young people, and families around the world.
