Case study: La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología simplifies its online training with SMATX

La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología is an initiative of the University of Burgos, in collaboration with Burgos City Council and FECYT – Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. Since its creation, the project has promoted educational activities to bring science closer to all audiences, with a practical and participatory approach.

In 2021, they launched their website, integrating registration sales and online teaching into a single platform. But the rapid growth of the project put their digital infrastructure to the test.

“Our WordPress installation became overloaded and difficult to maintain. Teachers didn’t have enough tools to create the courses they wanted, and it wasn’t possible to obtain complete reports on student activity,” explains Eduardo Cámara, IT manager at the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit at the University of Burgos.

The challenge: stability, scalability, and efficient management

The priority was clear: to improve the stability and performance of the platform and offer teachers and students a familiar and efficient environment. The University opted for Moodle as its LMS, taking advantage of its power, scalability, and the academic community’s previous experience with this system.

The solution: Moodle + WordPress integration with SMATX

After analyzing different options, the team at La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología chose SMATX, the solution from 3ipunt for integrating Moodle and WordPress.

“We were looking for a company specializing in Moodle, and what made us choose 3ipunt was its versatility: it wasn’t a closed project, but rather a collaboration in which we could actively participate in the design and development of the site,” says Eduardo Cámara.

With SMATX, they achieved a seamless connection between both systems, simplifying course and user management. Among the most valued features is the synchronization between WordPress and Moodle, a quick and easy process thanks to the plugin developed by 3ipunt.

In addition, specific customizations were incorporated to adapt the solution to the project’s needs, integrating the requested functionalities directly into the plugin.

Results: a more agile, unified, and user-friendly platform

Since the implementation of SMATX, the results have been remarkable:

  • Simplification of the registration process for training activities.
  • Centralized management that allows parents to register multiple children from a single account.
  • Digitization of attendance monitoring and image transfer, eliminating the use of paper.
  • Greater flexibility in creating course and product files.
  • Unified and clear design of training products, with a more consistent user experience.

“We have improved turnaround times by creating products in WooCommerce directly from Moodle courses. The process is now simpler and more efficient,” says Eduardo Cámara.

One step closer to digital education

Thanks to its integration with SMATX, La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología now has a robust, scalable platform tailored to the needs of its educational community. This is an example of how technology can drive scientific outreach and training projects with real impact.
