Learning no longer takes place solely in front of a computer. It happens during a night shift, on the underground, in a shop’s staff room or during those twenty spare minutes before a meeting. For most organisations, mobile devices are now the most important channel for accessing their training.
What if your course had its own app?
The Branded Moodle App is the official Moodle app available on the App Store and Google Play, featuring your organisation’s name, icon and colours, and published under your own Apple and Google developer accounts. It uses the same technology, receives the same updates and follows the same roadmap as any other Moodle app. The difference is that this one is yours: your staff search for it by your name, install it and log in. And it’s free for them, always.

What’s included in your app
- Your full identity: name, icon, colours and home screen, across all your branches.
- Push notifications with no limit on the number of devices, including multimedia content, and custom notifications from the Apps Portal in addition to those generated by the campus.
- Download courses offline, with no limits, and they’ll synchronise once you’re back online.
- Access via QR code and biometric login, which remove friction precisely where most people give up: the password screen.
- The app, tailored to your needs: the menu items you need, features you don’t use hidden away, and text written using your organisation’s terminology.
- Usage analytics with Matomo Analytics, which brings the tracking you already have in your Moodle into the app.
- Independent hosting and compliance with the GDPR for your students’ data.
- Multiple sites or brands within a single app, if your training project operates using separate structures.
When does it make sense to raise this issue?
It’s particularly well suited if:
- You’re training hundreds or thousands of people and you need to ensure that your messages reach everyone.
- People learn away from a desk: in shops, hospitals, on the road, or whilst working in the field.
- You sell online training, and the app is part of what you offer.
- You’re promoting the brand across all channels, yet mobile is the only one where you’re not visible.
If your campus isn’t yet mobile-friendly, it’s best to be honest about it: first, it’s worth reviewing how the courses are laid out. A bespoke app with content designed for a large screen will exacerbate the problem rather than solve it. This is part of the groundwork, and we’ll tackle it together before building anything.
What does having your own app mean in the long term?
Publishing the app is just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, there are decisions that will shape the project for years to come: where your students’ data is stored, the maintenance of your Apple and Google developer accounts, and updates whenever a new version of Moodle is released or the app stores’ requirements change.
The latter is always underestimated. An app isn’t just launched: it needs to be maintained.

How it works
The usual course consists of four stages and is measured in weeks, not months:
- Consultancy. Qué necesita tu proyecto formativo y qué ajustes pide el campus para que la experiencia móvil funcione.
- Customisation. Nombre, icono, colores, pantalla de inicio y preparación de vuestras cuentas de desarrollador.
- Construction and testing. Compilación, verificación en iOS y Android y ajustes finales.
- Publication. Revisión de Apple y Google, y app disponible para descargar.
In addition to this, we provide training to ensure the campus is set up using mobile authentication, which is where a large part of the outcome is determined.
Why develop it with us?
At the 2024 Moodle Global Awards, we received the ‘Branded Moodle App Contributor of the Year’ award. It recognises both the apps we have developed and what we have given back to the community whilst building them – which, for us, go hand in hand.
Tell us how many people you’re teaching, how they study and what you want to achieve on mobile devices. We’ll tell you what you need in your particular case and what results you can expect.
